I had absolutely NO idea what to expect. I knew I needed to wear fitted clothing, that I should bring water and that I was going to be trying something totally out of my comfort zone for the very first time. I did not know a single soul in my class...but I had previously met the instructor, so at least I knew someone. And, did I fail to mention that I'm terrified of heights?!?
We started class with a quick warm-up/stretch. I think I was the second to last person to arrive, so I was paired with a girl who had walked in literally 2 seconds before me. It was no accident that we ended up paired together. She was super funny, super excited and just a genuinely awesome soul to be around. We both chatted about how it was a little nerve-racking to not "know" anyone and join the class anyway, and how we were glad we had been paired together.
Our instructor, Shauna Powell, literally had us "jump" right in. Like I said, I had no idea what to expect. I wasn't sure if we were just going to "learn the ropes" (no pun intended) or if we would actually have some time to try out the silks. To my pleasant surprise, we were in the silks the majority of the class!
We started by learning how to properly "hold our weight" in the silks. At AerialClt, there's a "no pull-up necessary" disclaimer. They mean it. I have ZERO upper body strength and I was able to do EVERY SINGLE technique that Shauna taught us. I was having so much fun that I forgot I was "working out". I definitely felt the workout in my arms and core the next day!
Aside from the incredible workout I gave my body, I designated much-needed TIME to myself. 2018 is going to be a year of self-love advocation for me. Loving yourself can mean many things. To me, it means keeping myself healthy, inside and out: Eating whole foods. Giving myself adequate rest and sleep. Appreciating my body through fun workouts and using the gifts God gave me for a greater purpose. Acceptance of who I am and where I am in life right now. Allowing myself & others grace. Loving each day and living it BIG TIME.
On my way home I had time to relax and listen to the silence. I knew I made an awesome choice to try something new and to break out of my comfort zone. It's safe to say, I'll be an aerialist from now on.
